Gran Canaria Demonstrator – Soil Aquifer Treatment & Reclaimed Water for Irrigation

We are excited to announce the release of a new video showcasing the Gran Canaria Demonstrator (DM#6), part of the GENESIS project. This site, located just 10 km south of Las Palmas, focuses on Soil Aquifer Treatment (SAT) and the use of reclaimed water for irrigation, aiming to improve both the quantity and quality of groundwater resources.

The demonstrator addresses critical challenges such as marine intrusion and irrigation contamination affecting a groundwater body consisting of 109 wells (72 currently operational). Recent data shows a decline in water quality, making this initiative essential for sustainable water management.

Currently, the Jinámar Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) processes 1.89 hm³/year, reuses 0.47 hm³/year, and discharges 1.42 hm³/year into the sea—about 5,000 m³ of treated wastewater daily. The goal is to recharge the aquifer using treated wastewater, exploring methods like indirect recharge, localized percolation, and direct injection, while complying with Spanish regulations (RD 1620/2007).
