GENESIS Bootcamp in La Palma: Training the Next Generation of Water & Climate Experts

The GENESIS project is launching a hands‑on training bootcamp in La Palma as part of the GeoIntern programme. This initiative brings international students to the Canary Islands to take part in real research focused on Nature‑based Solutions (NbS) for improving water supply, infrastructure and storage across Macaronesia.

During the programme, participants will work alongside hydrologists, geologists, water‑management specialists and local stakeholders. Their field observations and data collection will directly support the implementation of GENESIS NbS sites, currently at different stages of development.

Over the course of the bootcamp, students will:

  • Visit and study the four GENESIS demonstrator sites in La Palma: Barlovento, Trasvase, Tenisca and Angustias, each showcasing different approaches to water abstraction, underground storage, infiltration monitoring and flood‑risk reduction.
  • Receive training in specialised hydrology equipment and methods, including piezometers, water‑quality measurements and field soundings.
  • Take part in workshops on topics such as communicating hydrological uncertainty, social media engagement, and anticipating local climate‑change impacts.
  • Explore agricultural sites (banana, avocado and other plantations) to understand how water scarcity affects local communities.
  • Produce a group research poster to be showcased at the VI VulcanaSymposium in Autumn 2026.

This bootcamp is hosted by GeoTenerife, in collaboration with key local and regional partners who support the scientific, community and capacity‑building components of the training:

  • AIM, Association for Research of Macaronesia. A non‑profit organisation based in La Palma, dedicated to fostering research that aligns with regional priorities and forward‑looking perspectives, as reflected in the GENESIS project.
  • Consejo Insular de Aguas de La Palma. The autonomous body responsible for the management, planning and administration of the island’s water resources, providing essential technical and institutional support.
  • LPRC, La Palma Research Centre. An independent, internationally active think‑tank headquartered in La Palma, supporting research, innovation and community engagement across Macaronesia.
  • Luca Graziano. GENESIS 2025 training bootcamp scholar and Research Technician in marine microbiology at IEO‑CSIC (Santa Cruz de Tenerife), contributing scientific expertise and mentoring.

This training experience strengthens the GENESIS mission by equipping young researchers with practical tools to understand and support sustainable water management on islands, ensuring solutions are scientifically robust and well integrated into local communities.

Current deadline: March 6th
There is a possibility that this deadline may be extended.
